What We Do

The Producer Register Ltd was set up to assist producers meet their obligations for the responsible management of waste electrical and electronic equipment, waste batteries and waste tyres. It was incorporated in 2015 but was formerly known as the WEEE Register Society Ltd. Our present Board of Directors comprises of Timothy A. Cronin, Thomas A. Geraghty, Áine Higgins, Claire Penny, Patrick Macken, Derek Moriarty, Paddy Murphy and Dominic Henry.

The WEEE Register Society Ltd was established in 2005 under government approval to assist producers meet their obligations in line with an EU Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 January 2003 on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). This Directive established the principle of producer responsibility. The WEEE Directive requires producers to be responsible for the financing of the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE from 13 August 2005.

In 2008, the WEEE Register Society Ltd established a register of battery producers based on the information provided in The Battery Directive 2006/66/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 September 2006 on batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators and repealing Directive 91/157/EEC. The Battery Directive required producers to be responsible for waste batteries and accumulators from 26 September 2008.

In 2017, Waste Management (Tyres and Waste Tyres) Regulations 2017 were introduced and The Producer Register Ltd hold responsibility for the registering of all companies considered a producer as defined in S.I. 400 of 2017.

The principal functions of The Producer Register Ltd include

  • Establishing and maintaining a register of all producers of EEE, batteries & accumulators and tyres
  • Notify the EPA or appropriate agency where there is evidence of non-compliance
  • Verification of visible Environmental Management Costs (vEMC)
  • Determination of the market share of individual producers
  • Implement annual audits of producers
  • Keep proper accounts of the Register
